Payment setup is where I see more silent lost sales than anywhere else in a Shopify store — not because the gateway is complicated, but because a few small settings get left on their defaults.

Setting up Razorpay

Razorpay is the most common payment gateway for Indian Shopify stores — it supports UPI, cards, net banking and wallets in one connection. The setup itself is straightforward: create a Razorpay business account, complete KYC with your business documents, then connect it under Shopify's payment settings. The part people miss is testing a real transaction end-to-end before going live — including what the customer actually sees on the payment screen on a phone, not just a desktop preview.

Adding cash on delivery properly

COD matters in India far more than in most markets, especially for first-time buyers who haven't ordered from your store before. Done properly, this means:

  • A COD option that only appears for pin codes you can actually deliver and collect cash for — not a blanket option that creates failed deliveries in areas your courier doesn't cover.
  • A small COD convenience fee, if you choose to charge one, clearly shown before checkout rather than added as a surprise.
  • A clear order-confirmation message so COD customers know their order is genuinely placed, since there's no payment receipt to reassure them.

Mistakes that quietly cost orders

  • No COD limit. Allowing COD on very high-value orders leads to more refused deliveries and return shipping costs.
  • Payment options customers don't recognise. If the checkout only shows a generic "card" option without UPI front and centre, you'll lose customers who intended to pay by UPI and don't see it immediately.
  • Not testing on mobile. The vast majority of Indian Shopify traffic is on phones — a payment flow that works on a laptop but stalls on a phone browser is a real, common issue worth checking before launch.

Getting this set up correctly

This is part of every Shopify store I build — payments, COD rules and shipping are tested on real phones before handover, not just previewed on a desktop screen. If your existing store needs this fixed, get in touch and I'll take a look.
